The traders in the city of Elmshorn and their customers are sorely afflicted: for months, they had to suffer obstructions by construction works in the "Königstraße"; now the digging in the pedestrian zone starts anew. But this time, the adverse effects shall be restricted; according to the motto "the best is simply going underground", tunnelling works around the "Nikolai"-church are carried out to a large extend subterraneously.

Dr. Brigitte Fronzek, mayoress of Elmshorn, baptized the AVN-600 roadheader "Klein-Trude". The almost trouble-free tunnel construction is made possible by means of a method called "microtunnelling". In front of the "Karstadt" building, a start shaft has been constructed wherefrom a boring equipment will begin to "eat" its way in a depth of four meters under the "Alter Markt" towards the "Königstraße". There, at the entrance of the redesigned strolling land, a target shaft is located wherefrom the rotating boring head will be lifted off after arrival. Each time the drill which works in the same manner as the little sister of the giant milling cutter "Trude" of the Hamburg Elbtunnel, has removed soil in a length of 70 centimeters, a tube of appropriate length will be pushed in. As soon as the tunnel will be finished towards the "Kö", "Klein-Trude" will again be placed into the start shaft and this time driven towards the "Marktstraße". Completion of works and laying of all supply and disposal lines is anticipated about end of May. Until October, tunnelling works in the "Marktstraße" shall be finished in an analog mode. During application of "Klein-Trude", precision is required. Therefore, a computer driving the boring head along a laser beam towards the target will assume the control. The entire aggregates at the start shaft are weighing tons. In order not to damage the pavement of the "Alter Markt" during delivery, the paving stones had been picked up and replaced by a tarmac. Up to the Christmas trade, everything will shine in ancient splendor. Source: "Hamburger Abendblatt"
