"Till December of this year, the local sewerage of Dresden is constructing a new intercepting sewer for 15 million Euros in parallel to the old one on a distance of 3250 m along the Elbe river on the "Johannstädter" side." That was stated by construction supervisor Heiko Nytsch. The existing, more than 80 years old sewer is in part porous, holely and rinsed.
Via the Altstädter intercepting sewer, the sewage is transported to the sewerage plant in Kaditz. Despite the winter weather, works are barely impaired. "We are absolutely on schedule," smiles construction supervisor Nytsch. The new construction is carried out for the most part in closed pipe jacking. By means of a portal crane, a concrete part reaches the starting pit in a depth of 6 meters. There a hydraulic press advances the parts. At the target pit, the excavation will be received. "Pipe jacking works at almost every temperature," says Nytsch. At the moment, ground water also causes no problems at all. For any case of emergency, one is prepared. But there is no case of emergency to be foreseen. According to particulars of Nytsch, the concrete pipes with a length of four meters and a weight of 22 tons are a custom product with the special "Dresdner" profile that is featuring by a flat base on which the retaining carriage with its shields can drive for cleaning works. The pipes are indeed marginally more expensive than conventional pipes, but the shields can be used furthermore and it is not necessary to change over the retaining carriage. The local sewerage of Dresden already started the new construction of the intercepting sewer in September of last year. A reconstruction would be too expensive, therefore, a new sewer is built directly alongside the old one. "During the construction works, the old sewer can be used further on. Also the citizens of Dresden will be spared th complete road blocking." told spokesperson Jana Wenke. In September, the starting pit was in the level of "Hertelstraße". Reconstruction will be carried out in three sections between "Steinstraße" and "Vogesenweg". Source: "Dresdner Neueste Nachrichten"
