Description
The tacs TBM guidance system acs as an interface between the areas of expertise in mechanical tunnelling. By integrating methods, insights and practical experience of surveying, civil engineering and machine technology multidisciplinary synergy effects are released.

As far as some years ago it has been the surveyors task to determine the position of the tunnel boring machine (TBM). The operator of the TBM tried to navigate the TBM close to the designed tunnel axis at the end of each advance as exact as possible. The ring builder tried to build the ring inside the TBM tail as exact as possible.

Developing the acs guidance system the main idea has been to integrate these three areas of advance control into a complete solution, satisfying all requirements.

By providing clear graphical and numerical displays the relationship between determination of position, initiation of navigation steps and building rings without squeeze tensions becomes apparent to the user. Some of the damages that occured at the final tunnel in the past can therefore be avoided.

Surveying
The acs guidance system determines the position of the TBM using a laser beam. The laser beam is visible for all involved people. It is understandable for everyone that the laser beam must reach the target unit in the TBM to ensure a proper determination of the position of the TBM. The acs target unit inside the TBM works fully automatic and maintenance free. Besides the permanent determination of the position of the TBM a lot of supporting tools are provided to the surveyor. They also facilitate miscellaneous tasks, e.g. manual checking measurements for any reference point.

For gathering of external measurement values, e.g. from the control computer of the TBM (PLC), interfaces are available. All data can be exported into spreadsheet or watched from the office at the surface.

Maschine Technology
Configuration, geometry and steering behavior of the available tunnel boring machines can be simulated in acs. Clear input masks are provided for editing.

The driving behavior of tunnel boring machines with several articulations can be taken into account and compensated as well as horizontal and vertical drift of a TBM in a challenging geology. After an evaluation of the driving behaviour the TBM operator receives detailled specification for steering. An "automatic" control of the TBM is possible with some limitations.

Civil Engineering
After determination of the position of the last built ring and automatic evaluation of the position of the TBM acs calculates a prediction of the drive und gives a suggestion for the optimum erection of the conical ring. It is quite difficult for the user on-site to realize the complicated three-dimensional geometrical relationship between position of the TBM, last built ring and designed tunnel alignment without additional tools. acs checks the plausibility of input values and shows planned ring and TBM in one graphic. Managing shift engineer or ring builder can decide quickly if the ring was choosen correctly and start ring erection.

Coaction during advance
The driver can watch on the screen how the initiated steering action will affect the drive of the TBM. So he can realize e.g. how an abrupt correction will lead to a ring which lies outside the center of the clearance. The driver can see already during advance how to steer to enable ring erection without squeeze.

The ring builders get information from the surveying how the ring should be built, about the position of the different segments und which clearance should be reached.

The acs TBM guidance system facilitates the work of the persons involved in advance. The acs TBM guidance system enhances quality of the final product, the tunnel consisting of segmentally lined rings.
